7 Creative Ways to Add Scripture Memory to Your Homeschool Day
“I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” Psalm 119:11 ESV
Bible memory is one of my personal favorite topics to highlight in our family’s homeschool curriculum. Growing up, I was privileged to have amazing Bible teachers in my local church. Perhaps I have this perspective because they were committed to teaching with delight. It was the sense of delight I remember so well. Their delight in teaching God’s Word spurred on delight in the minds and hearts of the students. From Bible reenactments to Bible memory competitions, scripture memory was always a fun element within our local church body.
When I started having children of my own, I wanted to think of ways to sow the seeds of God’s Word in their hearts as well. The Bible memory activities I had grown to love through the years quickly came to the forefront. As a homeschooling family, these ideas easily became a part of our curriculum.
Here are 7 simple and fun ways to help store up God’s Word in your children’s hearts!
Verse Scramble Race -Take a favorite memory verse, write it out in large handwriting word-by-word on index cards. Make a second set of cards identical to the first one. Have two children (parents can jump in, too) stand at opposite ends of a table facing each other with their stack of index cards piled together. Shout “Go!” and have each contestant unscramble the verse correctly by laying out the cards in order. The first person to reorder their cards correctly wins! For older participants, challenge them to unscramble a longer passage (4 or 5 passages) having one whole verse on each index card.
Fill in the Blanks - Take a memory verse, write or type it out and leave blanks where key words should be. Simply have participants write in the correct words. This activity is not necessarily a race but fun to complete. For younger participants, be sure to have an answer box on the page to choose from. For older participants, challenge them to fill in blanks for several verses at a time.
Verse Puzzle - Write a verse on a large piece of card board (2’ by 3’). Cut the cardboard jigsaw style into several pieces. Have your children work to place the pieces together again.
Scripture Memory Escape Room - Fun! Fun! Fun! Take Scripture memory to another level by filling out 8-10 index cards with Bible verses. For each verse, attach a riddle or code to break that tells where to find the next clue card. At the end of the escape challenge, celebrate by hiding a prize in a treasure box to represent the treasure that God’s Word is to us. For multiple ages, work in teams by pairing younger players with older players to help them. For older participants, take the idea up another notch by requiring the clues to be solved over a period of several days. If you have drivers in your home, you could even have the clues be solved over several distances!
Scripture Memory Craft Projects - Do a craft activity as a family! Challenge your learners to represent themes from scripture verses through a craft project. For example, “The name of the Lord is a strong tower;” (Proverbs 18:10a ) Use craft sticks to build a tower. Highlight how the sturdiness of the tower represents how we can trust in the name of the Lord to protect us!
Scripture Verse Scavenger Hunt - Print out a Bible passage of about 8-10 verses. Using key words from the passage, create a list of these words for your children to “hunt” for as they read. For example, “Find the word ‘light’ two times.” “Find the word ‘help’ 3 times.
Scripture Memory Word Search - Simple, but effective, use key words from a scripture verse (or verses) to hide in a word search puzzle. Time each participant to see how fast they can find each word.
Scripture memory can be a wonderful addition to your current homeschool routine. Enjoy these tips and see your family grow in their love for God’s Word!
