Things That Kids Can Make and Sell - Part 9: Food, Baked Goods & Beverages

This idea might seem obvious but let's take a deeper look into what treats sell the BEST! Here are 5 tricks to sell MORE!

Here are 5 tricks to selling lots of food, drinks and desserts!

#1 - Unique

Your dessert must be unique in order to convert a good idea into actual sales. Check out this young business owner who specializes in making desserts that are both dairy and gluten free. Besides unique ingredients, your child can also try using fun packaging, themes or shapes. One young business owner had unique lemonade because he made it himself and had flavors such as mint!

     #2 - Salesmanship

If children simply follow these steps they will get sales:

    1. Greet customers and everyone walking past your booth.
    2. Show them what you have for sale.
    3. Ask them if they would like ________.
    4. Provide good customer services and don't forget to thank them.
    5. Don't be discouraged. Do this over and over again.

    #3 - Branding

Look at these Young Business Owners in matching shirts with their booth decorated! How can a customer resist purchasing these homemade cake pops!?

    #4 - Samples

When a customer tries a free sample of your delicious goodies it does two things.

    1. Brings customers to your booth.
    2. Increases the chance of making a sale.

    #5 - Food

There is never enough food at events. Often festivals, fairs and even the children's section of a market are over saturated with baked goods. Too much sugar options and not enough food options! By the end of a full day of making sales at the Young Business Owner's event, children and adults are often exhausted from the sugary lemonade, soda pop, cupcakes, cookies and other desserts. Children should be prepared with gloves, plates, napkins and utensils. It is very important to only sell food that your child can make without adult assistance.

    Here are some ideas:

    • Bring pre-made hot dogs in a crockpot. Most children can handle serving them with tongs by placing them into a bun per order. Customers can help themselves with toppings.
    • Pre-made sandwich wraps where customers can add their own fixings and sauces. Grab and go fruit and veggie cups.
